Welcome to Thornhill Community Pre-School/Playgroup in Dewsbury

From the very start of Thornhill Community Pre-School/Playgroup journey from a small parent toddler group to a well established Pre-School, we have always had the needs and wants of the community at the forefront of everything we do.
Therefore we are constantly striving to provide a setting which the community can be proud of and access with ease.
Our main aim is to give each child who walks into our setting the 'best start in life' making sure they have memories to cherish for years to come, the friendships they made, the games they played and the laughter they had along the way.
The children which we care for are valued for their individuality, therefore custom created activities are always available for every child to freely explore, investigate, learn but most importantly have fun from.
While we care for children we support and encourage each child to become confident, independent and great communicators, preparing them for the school lives ahead.
Within each room children have free access to
Spacious outdoor area- to run, climb, jump, explore in, learning about the world around us.
All kinds of messy play including paint, slime, glue, play dough etc- to learn the different textures of objects and how these can change.
Water and Sand play- to explore the natural world and experiment with the different textures.
Imagination corner-this supports children to challenge their imagination, make up their own stories and act them out.
Literacy area- to practising the first forms of writing.
Mathematics- to investigate numbers and shapes.
Construction area- with a variety of construction equipment to build what ever the imagination wants to.
Music area-to explore music, songs and instruments, making the loudest band.
Quiet Corner- to read and look through stories, sing songs and quietly discuss the events of the day.
We are dedicated staff who want to achieve the best in their career to help and support all children and their families.

We are lucky enough to have a building purposely built for families. Within our large building we have 3 rooms designed for caring for children between the ages of 3 months to school age. These rooms are named Playgroup 1, Playgroup 2 and Pre-School.
Our Pre-School room is purposely designed to support children with the last year before school. We focus on all aspects of the curriculum and school readiness. Within this room we change the themes to support and challenge children's learning.
Playgroup 2, this room has children aged between 2 years to 3 years. The themes which are created for the Pre-School room are also implemented into this room. The children are supported with the settling in to a setting process.
This room has been newly created to cater to the younger children, we have purchased all equipment to support the needs of our youngest children. We focus on settling in and exploring the basic resources within this room.
We have created 3 areas to home a unique wildlife area, allotments and a sensory room. All of these have been designed and created to give all children a different environment to explore in and learn about the world which they live in, investigating these in a magical way.
In November 2022, we had our inspection which we are so pleased to have received GOOD in all areas. The inspectors praised the team for our commitment to children and families.
To see the whole report please visit find an OFSTED report. It is a really GOOD read. We even made the local newspaper, Dewsbury reporter.
Children settle quickly and are engaged and happy in their play. They enjoy well-thought-out activities that develop their language and mathematical skills. Staff place children at the centre of everything they do and work hard to ensure children achieve their next steps. Staff have high expectations of children's behaviour and of the rules and routines. Staff provide many opportunities for children to develop their independence skills. For example, children put on their own coat, wash their hands and clean the table before snack.
The staff offer a language-rich environment, developing skills through story times, singing and rhyme sessions. Strong relationships between staff and children support a nurturing environment in which children make good progress from their individual starting points.
Opportunities are given to children to develop their personal, social and emotional skills. Children wait patiently to make their own 'Gruffalo crumble'. They patiently take it in turns to add their 'pretend' ingredients, mix it up and eventually eat it. Children learn life skills and build on their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. They relish spending time in the outdoor area, planting and growing seeds. When ready, children pick the fruit and vegetables to make soups and smoothies. Parents have opportunities to come in and try the food children have made.
They recently explored the 'Kindness Festival' in conjunction with 'Anti-Bullying Week', supporting their understanding of how they can be kind and accepting towards others.
Staff support children's development well.
Staff and leaders support children with special educational needs or
disabilities effectively, and parents are positive about the support their children receive.
Staff talk about everyone wanting the 'best for every child'.
To further improve the quality of the early years provision, the provider should:
Consider ways to further promote healthy eating, and build on children's knowledge of healthy and unhealthy foods.
We are located in the grounds of Thornhill J & I School.
